Here’s To Bionics

My Step-father went into surgery early this morning to receive a couple of implants; A defibrillator and pacemaker. He has had heart problems for awhile (underwent emergency open heart surgery about two years ago) and the condition has finally gotten to a point where in order to have an improved quality of life, it was determined the assistance of technology was required.

My Mother called a little while ago and said that everything went very well, aside from taking a little longer than was expected to complete the surgery. He is now recovering, is expected to be in the hospital over night, and then will be sent home to rest and take it easy for the next six weeks while the implants take hold.

This isn’t exactly the stuff that made The Six Million Dollar Man a legend, but it is still a prime example of how today’s usage of technology is so vital and important to our health and well being.

Where he may not be leaping sixty feet into the air, or running along at 60 miles and hour, or fighting Big Foot, he is expected to end up with more mobility and energy.

At least… That’s what we are hoping for…

Glad to hear that things went well, will pray for continued great recovery!

Yes, me too. Glad to hear things are okay. I hope the recovery process goes smoothly.

Well... There was a slight complication yesterday. The wires on the pacemaker had went where they should to begin with and it was working fine. But something has happened and the wires are now out of position, so the pacemaker is currently non-functional. They are going to wait about a week to see if the wires basically fix themselves (about a 40% chance) and if not, they'll have to go back in to get everything working right.

I forgot to mention that Monday was my Stepfathers birthday. Heck of a way to celebrate...

Hey, sorry about that wire thing (yeah, like wires will fix themselves... uh-huh); still, you're right, we are fortunate to live in a world where medical technology can do some amazing things (cyborgs... )

Here's hoping for that miraculous wire fix it thing! :-)

But, dear Morgan, he is in good spirits in spite of everything, and he is bound and determined to beat this thing. That is 3/4 of the battle when recovering. As a healthcare professional, I have seen many times when people just give up and then things just spiral down from there. He may have to have the procedure redone, but, with his will to get back to the quality of life that he had before, he will overcome this. Besides, he has to show you up in chopping wood.

Slacker, we have the technology... :) I've actually been reading recently on newer developments in bionics. It's amazing just what can be done these days, and by the time we need to start replacing things, who knows...

Thanks again DD for your thoughts. At least it will get fixed, one way or the other.

Um, MG... Show me up in wood chopping? Um... Did I ever tell you about that time I worked as a lumberjack.....??? [eg] Besides, I believe in using technology to my full advantage. Can you say: Hydraulic Wood Splitter?

(cue music) "He's a lumberjack, and he's ok..."

Hydraulic Wood Splitter? I've used one of those! FUN!!!

Fun, Dodo, and you don't even have to break a sweat doing it!!! Not to mention the back...
